Speedways and Cleaning Products

I've received a magazine where several plumbing contractors have been sued because the stainless braided speedways leading to a faucet where corroded and blew up causing major floods.

These contractors had to hire engineering firms, forensic firms and analyst labs to prove they were not at fault when they went to court. Turns out people store cleaning products inside their cabinets or close to their toilet, these bottle don't always close hermetically, in an enclosed space without ventilation and a humid environment from condensation when running hot water. It was found that chlorine based products combined with moisture in an enclosed space causes corrosive and a toxic environment and eats away stainless steel in an auto-catalytic way.

When the braids are deteriorated the vinyl tube inside gets punctured or blows up and now the contractor is blamed for it and has to prove his innocence with costly fees and time to run around coordinating his court case.

Another problem to prove your innocence is that the speedways need to have certification on them. The one in this particular case had only one letter stamped on it and were lucky to trace the certification with extensive research. It also states those braids can have no markings but may have a removable tag. You know those ugly price tag that are sticking out, leave them on! Something that I have noticed in the pictures is that the speedways were integrated with the faucet so now it’s our responsibility to check the faucet to see if all parts are approved and stamped! Installing a customer cheap faucet gets more complicated! They also recommend using 316 stainless speedways instead of 304 or 200, How the heck are we supposed to easily verify these?!

I've even heard of a flood in the family due to this. So to avoid problems down the road each time I will be under a sink replacing a faucet or working on something I will give them an information sheet with pictures to read and have them sign another page they have been informed that it is not recommended to store cleaning products, chemicals and drain opener can in their cabinet because they will cause corrosion, floods and extensive damage. Some contractors have started to put warning stickers under the sink.
