Virginia VA Master Plumber Exam
Since I looked for this information when I took my exam but didn't come up with much here's a rundown of what to expect for the VA Master Plumber Test.
* I recently took the test (June 18) and I heard VA is going to switch from the 12' code to the 15' code in the near future.
I am a Class 1 Plumbing License holder in NC and recently moved to VA. There is no reciprocity but being licensed in another state allows you to bypass the journeyman requirements in VA (10 years no school) and sit for the exam.
Having said that the VA exam was considerably easier than the NC exam, partially because the Class 1 (master equivalent) in NC includes plumbing + business (1.5" thick book) + gas + state bylaws. The VA master plumbing test is only plumbing + a small pamphlet on bylaws.
To take the NC class 1 you need 4 separate books (plumbing, gas, business, and bylaws) to take the VA masters you need the 2012 IPC book and a 20 page printout of how not to lose your license.
Given that if you want to open a company in VA and want a Class A or B business license ($150,000 and up) you'll need to take a separate business course and test through PSI. Class C just requires a $100 online self study course in business basics.
The VA test itself was pretty easy if you are familiar with the material, I was able to do the complete 88 questions twice in 3 hours and left an hour before the cutoff of 4 hours. There are NO isometric drawing questions unlike the NC test and an weirdly high number of questions on roof drainage.
Just leaving this here in case someone is looking for some insight.
